One of the most popular question asked in designing parking space for homeowners is, what is the difference between a Carport and a Garage? Therefore, we have decided to give a simple breakdown of the differences between the two.
A carport may have one or two walls depending on the design.
To best differentiate remember carports are NOT fully enclosed structures.
A garage consists of four walls. Note it is fully enclosed.
PROTECTION & STORAGE
Carports are a good option for safe guarding your vehicle against the elements such as rain, sun etc. However, because of its lack of walls it is not the safest option for protection against intruders, nor is it a good option for storing other items such as lawn mowers.
Garages however, protect against natures elements, trespassers, gives privacy and gives safe storage space.
TIME & PLACEMENT
Carports are simple structures and therefore can be build or installed in a short time. Carports can be placed basically anywhere. It can be attached to your home or freestanding. Moreover, it may be placed on a variety of surfaces; dirt, concrete or even grass.
Garages on the other hand are a bit more complex and require more time for careful planning and building. Note planning is very important. Garages may be attached, freestanding, at the back of your home etc. Depending on your design, your garage can an act as another entry to your home sheltering you from the rain as you make your way to the protected doorway. This is also a good design for individuals who are less mobile. Again, this is worth taking your time and thinking about. Make sure, you consult your designer, and go through your options. Also in keeping with the aspect of planning take, a look at the header marked building approvals another great aspect to think of!
