We live in a world of shapes being featured all around us; paintings, flowers, clouds, buildings and so much more. Taking some time to sit and reflect is one of the best ways to learn about yourself and your surroundings. In passing, one building may not catch your attention but another might not and this fact may apply to any other creation. Have you ever wondered why the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci has been acclaimed as “the best known painting”. Well, today we will explore the concept of Architectural Geometry, what it is, and how it surrounds us.
Shapes are a way of expression that could be found in several fields. According to artist Georgia O’Keeffe “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for”.

Architects too, use shapes to relay messages, depict their thoughts. Architectural geometry is “an area of research which combines applied geometry and architecture, which looks at the design, analysis and manufacture processes”.
To quote Lauretta J. Fox “to produce structures that were functional as well as models of architectural beauty, designers had to apply principles of mathematics in their work. Proper ratios and proportions related each feature of a building with every other one and with the whole structure. Various geometric shapes provided maximum use as well as a pleasing appearance in all types of architecture”.
