No more dark laundry days! Tired of your dark cramped laundry room, renovating or building, here are a few tips and tricks to make your laundry efficient, attractive and stylish.
The first step in designing your laundry room is to think about your comfort along with your routine. Think what will make the experience more comfortable and efficient.
For instance while I do the laundry I sit and read, therefore, my “need” is a nice cool sitting area with proper lighting. But what are your needs?
To answer this questions let us make a list!
Of course the must haves:
- A washer and dryer.
- A folding area
However, a lot more detail goes into designing an efficient stylish laundry room. So we have decided to do a breakdown requirement of each.
Appliances (What to look for):
- Durable materials
- Front-loading appliances
- Power saving and water saving property appliances
- Stylish design that matches the color dynamics of the room.
Storage (What to look for):
- Have a variety of storage items to store items of different sizes and use.
- Examples- storage containers, baskets, shelves, cabinets, hanging rod, laundry carts, baskets and hampers.
- Safety, place laundry detergents high away from the reach of children and labelled.
- Take advantage of the space you have by installing floor-to-ceiling cabinets and storage areas.
Another key point is efficiency and maintaining a clutter free environment. To ensure that you maintain the orderliness of your environment LABEL your cabinets or baskets. This little trick goes a long way. It allows you to develop the habit of allocating and putting items in its correct location. Certainly, not a bad habit to develop your kids into.
Sufficient surface area (What to look for):
Sufficient space for folding and sorting your clothes. Also remember this surface will constantly be in use, so when purchasing buy durable scratch free counter top materials.
Sink (What to look for):
- A good brand.
Lighting (What to look for):
Both natural and artificial light are important. To add some interest to the room think about installing an eye catching light fixture. Good lighting helps ‘lighten the mood’ and makes the task that much lighter.
One key issue that most people complain about is that “stuffy” feeling in the laundry room so to avoid this install windows of the correct size and location for passive cooling. Also think of a ceiling fan for added comfort.
Flooring (What to look for):
- Easy Maintenance
Style (What to look for):
Add some personality, some colour. This may be:
- Fun wall art
- Beautiful curtains
- Relaxing paint colour
- A plant
- Interesting backsplash
